Why Tenerife wins in winter
- It stays warm. The south of the island averages 20-24°C right through winter, with plenty of sunshine — spring weather while the rest of Europe freezes.
- It's a short hop. Around 4 hours from the UK and much of Europe, with little or no time difference — so no jet lag with the kids.
- It's greener and calmer. Winter is one of the nicest times to come: the island is lush, the crowds are gone, and everything feels relaxed.
What to do with the kids in winter
- Whale & dolphin watching — all year round. Pilot whales and dolphins live off the coast every month of the year, so a boat trip is just as good in January as in July.
- Mount Teide. Spain's highest peak, often with snow on top while you're in a t-shirt below — kids love seeing snow and sun on the same day.
- The big parks stay open. Siam Park (water park) and Loro Parque run all year, and they're far quieter in winter.
- Quiet golden beaches. Playa del Duque, Fañabé and the Costa Adeje beaches without the summer crowds.
- Christmas & Three Kings. Christmas lights, markets and the magical Three Kings parade on 5-6 January — a family Christmas in the sun.
October and February half-terms are perfect windows for a warm break — flights and villas are calmer than peak summer, and the weather is still lovely.
Quieter — and often better value
Outside the summer peak, the island breathes. Beaches and attractions are calm, restaurants have space, and rates are often kinder than in July and August. You get the same sunshine with far fewer people.
