Tenerife is one of the best islands in the world to explore by car. The distances are short, the roads are good, and an hour's drive can take you from a sunny southern beach to the snow-dusted slopes of Mount Teide. If you want to see the real island beyond your resort, a hire car is the single best decision you can make — and we can sort it for you through our car rental page.
Why you really want a car in Tenerife
You can have a lovely holiday without leaving Costa Adeje — but you would miss most of what makes Tenerife special. Public buses (the green TITSA network) are reliable but slow and tied to timetables, and taxis between regions add up fast. With your own car you can chase the weather, reach the quiet beaches and villages, and turn the island's spectacular roads into the highlight of your trip. For families and groups especially, it is the most flexible and cost-effective way to get around.
Picking up your car: TFS and TFN airports
Tenerife has two airports. Tenerife South (TFS / Reina Sofía) is closest to the southern resorts including Costa Adeje, Los Cristianos and Las Américas — most holidaymakers fly in here. Tenerife North (TFN / Los Rodeos) sits near La Laguna and is handy for the north of the island. You can usually arrange pickup at either airport, or have a car waiting near your villa. Pick up at the airport you land at to save a transfer.
Have your driving licence, booking confirmation and the payment card in the main driver's name ready at pickup. Take a few photos of the car (including any existing scratches) before you drive off — it takes a minute and saves any doubt at drop-off.
Driving in Tenerife: roads, parking & fuel
The roads
The main TF-1 (south) and TF-5 (north) motorways are modern and easy. The fun begins on the smaller mountain roads — to Masca, Teide and Anaga — which are narrow, winding and steep, with hairpin bends and the occasional tour bus. They are perfectly drivable; just take your time, use lower gears on long descents, and pull into the marked passing spots to let faster locals by.
Parking
In the resorts, look for blue-lined parking bays (paid, via a meter) and free white-lined bays where available. Underground car parks are easy and inexpensive in the bigger towns. At popular spots like Teide viewpoints or Masca, arrive early — the small car parks fill quickly in peak season.
Fuel
Good news: fuel in the Canary Islands is among the cheapest in Spain thanks to the islands' special tax status. Stations are plentiful in the south; fill up before heading into the mountains or the remote west and north, where they are more spread out.
Insurance: what to know
Basic cover usually comes with an excess — the amount you would pay if the car is damaged. Decide in advance whether you want to reduce that excess with extra cover for peace of mind, especially if you plan to tackle the mountain roads. Read what is included before you sign, and you will avoid surprises. When you book through us, we are happy to talk you through the options in plain English.
The best road trips in Tenerife
Mount Teide
Spain's highest peak and a non-negotiable day out. Drive up through the pine forests into the lunar landscape of the Teide National Park. Go early, bring warm layers (it is far cooler at altitude), and consider the cable car for the final stretch.
Masca
A tiny village clinging to a dramatic ravine in the Teno mountains. The drive there is an adventure in itself — slow, winding and breathtaking. Set off early to beat the crowds and the midday heat.
Anaga rural park
In the far north-east, the ancient laurel forests of Anaga feel like another world — misty, green and wonderfully cool. Pair it with a stop in the historic town of La Laguna.
North vs south
The south is sunny and dry; the north is greener, lusher and a little cloudier. Driving north for a day — to La Orotava, Garachico or the Teide foothills — shows you a completely different Tenerife and is well worth doing.
Where to base yourself
A central southern base keeps the motorway and the mountains within easy reach. Costa Adeje homes like Villa Chloe Costa Adeje and Villa Orion Luxury make great launch pads, while La Huertita de Arona sits inland near the TF-1 for quick getaways in every direction.
